About Prof. Kamal Mahawar

Prof. Kamal Mahawar is one of the most experienced general, upper GI & bariatric surgeons in the UK and worldwide. He has been a consultant for nearly 14 years performing the full range of general surgical elective and emergency surgeries. He is an accomplished laparoscopic (key hole) surgeon and leads the bariatric surgery unit at Sunderland which is one of the biggest bariatric surgery programmes on the NHS and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles. He has an h-index of 42 and his work has been cited >7000 times. According to the data from the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (which Prof. Mahawar used to chair in the past), he is amongst the top ten percentile of bariatric surgeons by volume and his safety track record is one of the best in the world. He has been a guest speaker at dozens of conferences worldwide including those in the USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Mexico, India, UAE, Turkey etc. He is on the editorial board of several prominent journals in the field such as “Obesity Surgery”, “Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases”, “Clinical Obesity”, and “Annals of Royal College of Surgeons”.
He has been active in the obesity space for more than 15 years now and has also written a book called "Fight the Fat" to help the general population deal with obesity. This book and his first book, "The Ethical Doctor," which was published by Harper Collins, were widely admired in the media.
Professor Mahawar is a recognised global authority in bariatric surgery and the famous peer-reviewed journal (Obesity Surgery) published his biography in 2018 in recognition of his contribution to the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery. Professor Mahawar has mentored surgeons at several bariatric units in the country such as Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow; Birmingham Heartlands Hospital; St. Georges Hospital, London; Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. Professor Mahawar is an executive council member, trustee, and treasurer of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
He regularly performs procedures like sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), gastric bypass (both roux en y gastric bypass and one anastomosis or mini gastric bypass), and revisional bariatric surgery in the NHS and his private practice. His general surgery practice included over 100 procedures each of gall bladder surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and hernia surgery (for groin or inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, epigastric hernia, post surgery or incisional hernia etc) every year. He also regularly performs anti-reflux and hiatus hernia surgeries. He has been performing these surgeries with an exceptional track record of safety.
